Leopard Serpentine Sphere

Really lovely large polished Leopard Serpentine crystal ball. Pale cream with distinct “leopard spots” of dark green to black Olivine. From Nyanga, Zimbabwe. Good to Very Good Grade. Size approx 7cm. Weight approx 419g.

 

GEOLOGICAL:

Serpentine is not the name of a single mineral but a group of minerals that share similar physical properties and form by similar processes. In general, they occur in varying combinations of Magnesium; Iron; Nickel; Aluminium; and either Zinc or Manganese; with Silicon, Aluminum or Iron.

Serpentine is usually opaque, sometimes translucent, in massive formation and has a waxy feel. It occurs in various shades of green, but can be yellow, black, white, and other colours.

Leopard Serpentine gets its beautiful, distinct dark markings from inclusions of ferromagnesian Olivine. It is known geologically as Dunite, and forms part of a Serpentine complex some 2.6 billion years old. The dense material with extremely fine grains and uniform structure makes it ideal for carving. The Shona people traditionally use it for this purpose.

The polished material comes from a few small mines in Zimbabwe. Nyanga, Eastern Zimbabwe produces green-yellow to pastel yellow hues. Whereas Shamva, north of Harare, produces a stronger yellow colour.
