Hi beautiful soul,

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2023. We hope you’ve had a restful holiday and are charged up for the new year! Either way – we’re here to help you make the most of this first month. Let’s get aligned, sunshine!

Estimated reading time: 18 minutes

Featured Crystal of the Month

This month’s crystal is Angelite, the trade name for Anhydrite. A beautiful, very rare and highly sought-after mineral that was first discovered in 1794 in Austria.

‘Anhydrite’ is from the Greek ‘an’ (without) and ‘hydor’ (water). Anhydrite forms from Gypsum when it dehydrates. Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral, better known by its popular variants Selenite and Satin Spar. What’s really fascinating about Anhydrite is that when water is reintroduced to the environment, over time it reverts back to Gypsum! This is why the mineral is so scarce.

Anhydrite has an orthorhombic crystal habit and three perfect cleavage planes. This means it often breaks into cube-shaped pieces, despite not having a cubic habit. It can form long or short bladed tabular or prismatic crystals, but this is exceedingly rare. More often it’s found as cleavage fragments of parallel veins, nodular, massive and grainy forms.

It generally occurs as clear, white, or soft pastel colours such as blue, purple and grey. The colours are believed to be a result of trace minerals present (such as iron or magnesium) or exposure to gamma radiation.

  • A blue variant discovered in Peru in 1987 was given the tradename ‘Angelite’.
  • Another blue variant known simply as ‘Blue Egyptian Anhydrite’ was used by the ancient Egyptians to make beautiful statuettes and jewellery. Interestingly, the source of Egyptian blue Anhydrite has still not been found in modern times.
  • The Naica mine in Mexico is famed for the beautiful fanned crystalline clusters of blue Anhydrite that are produced.
  • A crystalline to semi-crystalline purple variant has relatively recently been discovered in Madagascar. Similar to the stunning purple crystals found in Switzerland in 1900. The Madagascan material is often associated with a more opaque peach Anhydrite, and / or with Chrome Diopside (itself fairly rare). It’s usually referred to as ‘Purple Angelite’.
  • A marble-like white-grey granular Anhydrite discovered in Costa Volpino, Italy, is known as Vulpinite.

Wheel of the Year Newsletter banner

The Wheel of the Year is an ancient calendar that marks and celebrates the season changes and the equinoxes, the movement of our earth in its relationship to the sun, warmth and cold, light and dark. LEARN MORE.

Following the change in seasons and tapping back into the rhythms of the natural world can help give your life more meaning, and help you be more present in the natural world and in your body.

In December we celebrated the Summer Solstice, also known as Litha – with the sun at the height of its power.

The Summer Solstice marks the longest day and the shortest night of the year. From this point onwards, the sun begins to recede northwards in the sky.

Days begin to grow shorter now as we slowly inch towards Autumn.

In February we will celebrate Lammas, marking the start of Autumn and the traditional first harvest celebration.

Astrology looks at the movements of the planets in our solar system in relation to the earth, and how these heavenly bodies can affect the energies we experience here. Just like the moon creates the tides of the oceans on earth, so too can these energies have effects on the energy, emotions and desires of the lifeforms on earth. You can use this knowledge to your advantage by planning around them and taking cues from them.

The AstroTwins say that this month’s astro events are dived into two acts. There is a time for releasing, re-evaluating and focusing inwards, and a time for hitting the pedal to the metal as the sky clears of retrogrades and urges us forwards.

The Capricorn season starts off the month, moving at a slow and more emotional tempo until January 20. Yesterday’s first full moon of 2023 glows in warm, caring Cancer.

“Tap into your sentimental side and let your feelings flow. Sensitive Cancer is the nurturer of the zodiac. The sign of the crab reminds us that the wisdom of our hearts is far more potent than any games of the ego.”

We’re in the infamous Mercury retrograde until the 18th, muddying communication and fritzing technology (and plans). Mars will exit retrograde in Gemini on the 12th, which will see an end to overanalysing and difficulty making decisions.

Take your time during the first half of January to marinade your resolutions and new year plans. Try to avoid having super important conversations until the second half of the month, since this Mercury-Mars combo retrograde is definitely not going to help things flow.

“Trailblazing Uranus wakes up from its five-month retrograde on 22 January. Bottlenecked plans with work and money could pick up speed again—stay on your toes!

After that, Aquarius season arrives, retrogrades right themselves and it’s game on!”

The Chinese new year starts on 22 January, ushering in the Year of the compassionate and abundant Water Rabbit. And adieu to the wild, unpredictable Water Tiger.

“With risk-taker Jupiter, the planet of growth and luck, in daring Aries until May 16, you’ve got planetary permission to step on the gas. There’s a solid case for using the first three weeks of January to evaluate your options. Then, you can confidently choose your 2023 direction and go!”

The Astrotwins also suggest doing a releasing ritual in the first half of January.

Let. It. Go! If you had a befuddling 2022, we feel ya! Clearing the fog in a post-pandemic world hasn’t been easy. Let us help you move forward by releasing 2022’s astrological baggage and turning your attention to your theme for 2023.

Spirit Prompts

Our Spirit Prompts section gives you suggestions for the month of things to do to help you connect to and enrich your spiritual world. They tie into the Wheel of the Year and astrology forecast, to help you make the most of the energies around you.

Take just half an hour each week to do one of the activities.

By doing just one, or all of these prompts, you can feel more aligned with your spiritual nature, feel a deeper richness of life and have a sense of belonging to something bigger than yourself.

Tapping into gratitude is one of the most powerful transformative energies you can bring into your life – we highly recommend this practice!

Studies have shown that by training your brain to think of things to be grateful for regularly, you can foster a more positive outlook on life in general, as well as become stronger and more resilient to stress and life’s pressures. If you don’t have a journal, then just use a piece of paper.

Lean into Cancer’s home-centred heart energy and think about who and what in your home you are grateful for.

Rituals are not linked to any one religion or religious belief. Rather, ritual and ceremony are acts that can enrich your life and spiritual world. These practices help you to connect to your spiritual self, stepping outside of the ‘daily grid’ and into a space of magic.

The start of the year is a great time to practise your divination skills.

Ask your angels, guardians and guides for divine inspiration and clarity on your direction for the year.

If you are new to spirit guides and angels, we have the perfect introduction available for you written by Ms Myst: Angels and Spirit Guides.

Gather everything you want to use in your ritual – incense, a notebook and pen, crystals and any divination tools you want to work with (e.g. an oracle or tarot deck or a pendulum).

Choose one or several crystals to heighten your psychic abilities, protect you, and aid you in connecting with your guides.

Labradorite, Angelite, Selenite, Apophyllite and Lapis Lazuli are all excellent choices.

We recommend using our crystal kit “The Psychic” which offers a powerful selection of stones for all psychic work.

Begin with a meditation to focus your will on your goal: to receive guidance on the year ahead. Use our basic meditation structure in HOW TO MEDITATE and mentally communicate your goal to your spirit guides.

Here’s some beautiful music to play from Guardian Angel Meditation in the background while you do this ritual. It’s 432 Hz, otherwise known as Verdi’s A, believed to open the third eye, relax and tune in.

Once you are in a relaxed, open, meditative state, use your chosen divination tool.

Do a one-year spread. Pull 12 cards, and arrange them in a circle. Each card represents the theme or message for that month. Pull a final 13th card for the middle of the circle, which represents the overall theme or message for the year.

On the right is an alternative layout for a new year spread by

You can ask your guides questions and use the pendulum to help you divine their messages for you. A nice way to get more clarity is to work with a chart where you can move the pendulum around.

Keep your journal handy to jot down whatever comes through for you – even if it doesn’t make sense at the time.

Later you will be able to go back to it and spend more time in contemplation or meditation on the messages you received.

Our Earth Time segment invites you to engage with our beautiful and precious earth by providing an Earth Healing or Earth Connection activity each month, in line with the energy of the month.

Start the new year off by tuning into the energy of mama earth around you.

This month’s Earth Time comes from

Do this exercise at home in your garden, or in a park or nature reserve nearby you.

Find a quiet place and get comfortable either standing or sitting on the ground.

Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and wait to feel grounded. Tune into gravity and feel it pulling you to the earth. Gently sway your body, if you like, in a gentle rhythm. Put your hands over your heart and feel your heartbeat.

After a while, become aware of your environment. Focus on one sense at a time as you extend your senses into nature:

  • Tune into sound and notice the sounds near and far, the silence in-between sounds, and the whole soundscape. Are birds singing? Crickets? Are leaves rustling?
  • Tune into touch and notice the texture and qualities of the air on your exposed skin. What textures can you feel where you’re sitting? Spread your fingers (and toes) and feel the air between them.
  • Tune into smell and notice the different aromas present. What does the earth smell like? The air?
  • Taste the air. Imagine the sensation of cool, fresh and pure river water in your mouth.
  • Open your eyes and soften your gaze. Sweep your eyes over the natural sights around you, not focusing too hard on anything, not identifying or analysing, just letting your eyes softly dance across the scene before you.

Revisit any sensations you like. When you are ready, gently stretch your body and slowly return to yourself.

This beautiful exercise can help you tune into earth’s energy. The more you practise it, the more grounded you will feel on a day-to-day basis. It will also help you become more attuned to areas that need earth healing, where you can give back.

Meditation helps to calm the mind, lessen anxiety, improve focus and concentration, lower blood pressure – and thousands of other benefits. Regular meditation practice is essential to whole body health.

Our meditation segment gives you inspiration for a meditation tied to the energies and main themes of the month. Use our basic meditation structure to prepare and enter into your meditative state.

This is the perfect 10 minute guided New Year meditation for reflecting on your growth from the past year and stepping into the energy you desire to feel in the upcoming year.

Get your journal handy for reflections afterwards, and happy New Year!

We hope you enjoy this month’s selection of spiritual activities and that they help you start the new year heading in the direction you want to go x
