Orange Calcite always makes me smile, like a fizzy little burst of joy! This month’s feature crystal is in tune with the Aries energy, ready to help you cleanse the stagnant, sad vibes out of your energy body and warm you up with a joyful turn towards your creativity and will.

We’ve just unboxed some crystal towers of a new material coming out of Madagascar. It’s been given the trade name Orange Twist Calcite because it has stunning swirling, wavy patterns. Gorgeous bright, rich orange colour throughout most of the material!

Orange Calcite Metaphysical

All orange crystals resonate with the sacral chakra, and tend to be energizing and invigorating. Orange Calcite is no exception, bringing a joyful and creative energy into its surroundings. It is said to enable Higher Self wisdom from the upper chakras to flow down and be integrated and grounded in the lower chakras without conscious analysis. It will help you clear out old, outdated energy patterns, amplifying a fresh flow of energy to align you with your personal will. Sign me up!

This month I bring you a crystal book from 1923Crystal Gazing is a how-to manual to connect to crystalline beings and improve psychic and channeling abilities. Written by Charles Jones under the pseudonym Frater Achad.

In it, he says one of the purposes of this book is to “show that the Ancient Methods of Working – if properly understood – are more scientific than modern ones, since they were designed to insure a definite type of vision and to put the Seer in touch with definite Intelligences of a Higher Order”.

Isn’t that amazing? And we call this subject “new age” haha!

Wheel of the Year Newsletter banner

We celebrated the Autumn Equinox of Mabon at the end of March, which we covered in our March newsletter. This month there are no festivals on the calendar until 1 May – Samhain! Samhain (pronounced SOW-en or SOH-een) is the beginning of the Wheel of the Year and the start of winter. It has lots of different names, Festival of the Dead / All Souls Day / Old Hallows Eve / Witches New Year – but you’ll likely be most familiar with the name “Halloween”, the heavily commercialized version courtesy of the US of A.

Final Harvest For The Year

Let’s look at the old traditions, viewed through the eyes of the village tribe, preparing for the coming winter, to understand this festival and it’s themes better:

It is the third and final harvest for the year and time for feasting and enjoying the last fresh bounty to be had, before the onset of the cold, barren winter months. Traditionally, hunting occurred now, and later on, livestock that wouldn’t survive the winter would be slaughtered on this day. Some would go to the great feast, while the rest would be prepared for the winter store. The deer slaughtered were thanked for their sacrifice, being recognized as giving their life to provide life-giving sustenance to the tribe.

The Antlered God, Cernunnos

And it is here at this time of year that the antlered God was recognized, giving thanks for His sacrifice, honouring the gift of life in death, and the cyclical nature of life. The antlered God is an aspect of Creatrix/Divine Source/Great Spirit, and the cycle of life and death itself, as understood by our ancestors living this Wheel of The Year in such a real and tangible way. The antlered God, sometimes called the horned God, and Cernunnos in Celtic mythology, was later demonized by the Roman Catholic church and became the classic depiction of “the devil”.

Inviting The Dead For Dinner

At Samhain, the veil between this physical world and the spirit worlds is believed to be very thin. We take this time to honour the Spirit world, the spirits of our ancestors and passed loved ones. We mark a goodbye to the year past, and the lives that have passed before us. Traditionally a place would be set at the feast table for our loved ones no longer with us, inviting them to join us should they so wish, honouring their place in our continued lineage.

Trick or treat came about through the tradition in some cultures to go to each other’s doors to share of each of their Samhain bounty. The young men of these village tribes would sometimes get up to mischief. Dressing up as visiting spirits, they would also knock on doors. Imagine setting a place at the feast table for your dearly departed, then getting a knock at the door and opening it to see a ghostly figure outlined!

The last of the pumpkins and squash would be brought in from the fields, making for bright orange and yellow decorations. Big fires would be lit and the dancing and merriment would usually carry on past midnight, welcoming the dawn of a new turn of the Wheel.

Celebrated on 31 October in the Northern Hemisphere, Samhain first became “All Saints Day” under the Roman Catholic church, later changing to “All-Hallows Eve” and finally ‘Halloween’ in modern day.

Today’s new moon in Aries and start of the astrological year is a powerful time to be setting your intentions!

In the dark moon, we plant our seeds, and as the moon builds, so does the energy and momentum. As the moon reaches it’s full peak, illuminating the night with its brilliant light, so too do our seeds burst open from the dark soil with life.

In this way, we can work with the lunar cycle to lend energy and potency to the goals we want to achieve. The first new moon of an astrological year has even greater power, as you can set the seeds for the year ahead.

Read on to discover four crystals to work with this new moon…

LAPIS LAZULI: Lapis resonates with the Third Eye and the Throat chakra, linking them together and enabling us to speak our authentic truth in alignment with our Higher Self and life purpose. Perfect for assisting us set those intentions!

LABRADORITE: Labradorite links the Third Eye and the Crown chakra, effectively tuning our intuition into our Higher Self frequency. It can help us to hear the guidance of our ancestors, spirit guides and guardians.

RAINBOW OBSIDIAN: Black Obsidian works with lightning speed to bring issues to the forefront which need healing. But it can sometimes be too much, too soon. Rainbow Obsidian softens the sharp edges of black Obsidian, bringing a gentler touch and holding space for us. The energy around the new moon can tend to stir up a lot of shadow work themes. This stone will strengthen your aura shield to protect you from external drama, while giving you the grounding and energy to work through your own.

GIRASOL: Like Quartz, Girasol can transmute and amplify energy. It shines a light on our inner emotions, truth and creativity, enhancing and clarifying them. Girasol is excellent for visualization and will encourage clear expression – helping you simplify complicated thoughts. Gentle and powerfully calming.
