Kutnohorite cabinet specimen in classic fan formation. Wessels Mine, South Africa. Size: 2.1 x 0.8 x 0.7 cm. Weight: 0.5 grams.

Kutnohorite is a rare calcium manganese carbonate mineral with magnesium and iron that is a member of the dolomite group. It is an intermediary mineral between Rhodochrosite and Aragonite. Kutnohorite is sometimes identified as a form of mangano/pink Calcite but in fact is recognized as its own individual classification. It was named by Professor Bukowsky in 1901 after the type locality of Kutná Hora, Bohemia, in the Czech Republic. It was originally spelt “kutnahorite” but “kutnohorite” is the current IMA-approved spelling.
