Blue Smithsonite Standing Freeform 9cm. Stunning, special piece with rich, close to gemmy area. The blue colour is close to Ajoite, with variable bands of brown, white to clear crystalline areas. Exceedingly rare material coming from a deposit in Congo with an excellent polish! Very Good to A Grade. Size approx 9cm. Weight approx 400g.

GEOLOGICAL INFO

Smithsonite is a member of the Calcite group, and the mineral form of zinc carbonate. It is named after James Smithson, the British geologist who first identified it. It is commonly found in botryoidal masses. Smithsonite occurs as a secondary mineral in the weathering or oxidation zone of zinc-bearing ore deposits. Usually blue-green due to the presence of copper, it can also be found as pink in presence of cobalt, or coloured yellow by the presence of cadmium.
