Fossil Goniatite Shell Polished 

Beautiful specimen with excellent polish. Striking white to black contrast. Size approx 3-4cm. Very Good Grade. From Atlas Mountains, Morocco.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Goniatites are ammonoid cephalopods (from the more primitive Agoniatitida). They date to the Middle Devonian age, which is some 390 million years ago.

Goniatites consist of a shell which is divided internally into chambers. Each chamber contained gas for buoyancy. The open chamber at the front of the shell provided living space for the animal. The general morphology and habit of goniatites was probably similar to that of their later relatives the ammonites. Being free-swimming and possessing a head, with two well-developed eyes and (surprisingly) arms.
