Description

Lovely Agatized Fossil Coral tumbled stone. Also called Fossil Coral or Fossilized Flower Agate. Most have distinct flower patterns, earning their nickname ‘Coral Flower Agate’. Good to A Grade.

 

Geological:

Corals are actually animals! They are made up of thousands of tiny animals called polyps. A coral polyp is an invertebrate that can be no bigger than a pinhead, to up to 30cm in diameter. Agatized fossil coral forms when Silica in water hardens and replaces ancient coral skeletons with Chalcedony. This process takes anything from 20-30 million years. We call the result a “pseudomorph”, which means that one mineral (the coral) has been replaced by another mineral (the Chalcedony) while keeping its original form (the polyp shape).
