GEOLOGICAL INFO

Cuprite is an important collector’s mineral and a minor ore of Copper. It is a soft, heavy, red oxide mineral. Cuprite is named for the Latin cuprum, “copper”, relating to its copper content. It can form as bright transparent red or lustrous, submetallic opaque crystals.

 

Native Copper refers to pure copper that occurs naturally. Copper is one of the few metallic elements to form on its own. And although it is metal, it is not magnetic. Its hypoallergenic properties make it widely used in the jewellery industry. Copper also kills many bacteria on contact.

It is the oldest metal used by humans, dating back to prehistoric times. In ancient times Copper was polished and used as mirrors. As well as light reflectors, boosting candlelight. Lumps of copper were traded as currency in Rome. While in Egypt, they used copper to purify water and treat patients.
