Pink Tourmaline in Quartz with Lepidolite 12cm

Nice big piece of this fantastic combo. White Quartz contrasting beautifully as a backdrop to striated pastel pink Tourmaline. Minor platy pink to purple Lepidolite in association adding a sparkle.

From Karibib, Namibia. Very Good Grade. Size approx 12cm. Weight approx 470g.

A percentage of specimens from this relatively recently discovered deposit have hints of blue hues in areas which is suggestive of Indicolite – blue Tourmaline. This would require lab testing to confirm. 

 

GEOLOGICAL

Tourmaline:

Tourmaline is the name for a group of crystalline boron silicate minerals. This mineral species was identified by mineralogists in the 1800s. Its name comes from mid 18th century French, based on Sinhalese “tōramalli”.

Tourmaline becomes electrically charged when heated. It is also piezoelectric (creates electricity under pressure). Tourmalines often have striations along their sides, and can form a three sided point-like apex, called a “Mercedes” formation due to the similarity to the Mercedes car logo.

Tourmaline can be found occurring in more colours and colour combinations than any other gemstone in the world! Tourmaline’s colours have many different causes. Manganese can create reds, pinks and yellows, while some pink and yellow Tourmalines might be due to colour centres caused by radiation.
