While Salrose is also known as Pink Calcite or Cobalt/Cobaltoan Calcite, it is in fact a pink Dolomite! It is correctly termed Cobaltoan Dolomite.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Cobaltoan Dolomite, also known as Salrose, is a rare variant of Dolomite containing Cobalt. It is only found in 5 countries in the world. Dolomite is an anhydrous (waterless) carbonate mineral, being composed of calcium magnesium carbonate. Cobaltoan dolomite gets its vivid pink shades from cobalt ions replacing magnesium and/or calcium within the crystal lattice.

 

Heterogenite is a cobalt oxide. The name Heterogenite came from Greek, “of another kind”, as the mineral differs in composition from similar minerals. It is an opaque mineral with a black, reddish or blackish brown colour, with a dull to metallic luster.
