Description

Orbicular Rhyolite Natural Rough Piece. Varying earthy shades of dusty browns, greys, reds and yellows with characteristic circular (orbicular) patterning.

This stone is most often labeled as ‘Leopard Skin Jasper’, ‘Leopard Jasper’, ‘Leopardite’ or ‘Orbicular Jasper’. It is not a Jasper (which is opaque Chalcedony) but rather a Rhyolite (a silica rich igneous rock).

 

GEOLOGICAL:

Rhyolite formed from volcanic magma rich in silica. The patterned circles are the process of glassy material in the stone crystallizing into fine grained Feldspar, Quartz etc over a long geological time scale. The crystallization starts out from points and grows radially outwards into ‘spherulites’. Colours are due to various concentrations of trace elements such as iron.

The name is derived from the Greek ‘rhyo-‘ (meaning ‘from’) and ‘rhyax’ (meaning ‘stream of lava’). Rhyolite consists of mostly Quartz and Feldspar (varieties Sanidine & Plagioclase), often with Hornblende and Biotite. Generally glassy or fine grained, it can also have larger crystals in a rock matrix.
