Phantom quartz crystals have been referred to as ghost crystals, spectre crystals and shadow crystals. Phantom crystals refer to the whispy or ghostly outline of a crystal point, inside a crystal. The crystal bearing the phantom is usually clear Quartz crystal (rock crystal).

The phantom is formed when the crystal’s growth paused or was interrupted, and another mineral settled on the point. Thereafter the crystal continued forming, encasing the ‘phantom’ outline within it. Phantoms can form from minerals such as chlorite, goethite or hematite, or even other varieties of Quartz, such as Milk Quartz, Smoky Quartz or even Amethyst.
