Yellow Opal Rough Piece 9cm

A very cool find from Namibia! Natural translucent clear/cream to yellow Opal large rough chunk. A few pretty dendrites in there too. Nice big display piece. Unusual and interesting! Very Good Grade. Size approx 9cm. Weight approx 334g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Opals are a broad group of stones that are composed of Cristobalite, Tridymite, a combination of both, or amorphous Silica, containing 3-21% water within its structure.

Gem opals (also known as precious or noble opals) usually have between 6-10% water and display a play of colour due to light refraction within the stone. Whereas common opals lack the play of colour and can be either opaque or glassy with a waxy lustre. Additionally, they are often fluorescent, glowing under UV light.

 

Dendritic stones have clear inclusions of Manganese Oxide that has crystallized in a muti-branching tree or moss like pattern. This pattern is often interpreted as plant fossil. Dendrites form as water rich in Manganese and Iron flows along tiny cracks between layers and cracks within the Opal.
