Andean Pink Opal Specimen 4.5cm

A natural rough piece of pink Andean Opal, also known as Peruvian Opal. Peru is the source of some of the world’s most beautiful opals. While they don’t have the flashy play-of-colour of gem opals, Peruvian Opals are instead famous for their stunning colours. It can be found in pastel blues, greens and pinks. This piece displays the soft pink to peach hues the region produces. From Peru. Good Grade. Size approx 4.5cm.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Opals are a broad group of stones composed of Cristobalite, Tridymite, a combination of both, or amorphous Silica. Additionally, they contain between 3-21% water within their structure.

Gem opals (also known as precious or noble opals) usually have between 6-10% water and display a play of colour due to light refraction within the stone.

Whereas Opals without this play of colour are known as common Opals. They can be either opaque or glassy with a waxy lustre. Further, common Opals are often fluorescent, glowing under UV light.
