An unusual arrangement of botryoidal platey golden to silver Mica. Rosette-like cluster effect. Very cool! Good to A Grade. From Brandberg, Namibia. Size approx 6cm. Weight approx 130g.

GEOLOGICAL:

Micas are a group of sheet silicates that form in distinct layers, called a phyllosilicate. The most common varieties of Mica include Muscovite (colourless to green, blue or brown), Lepidolite (pink to purple) and Biotite (black). Micas occurring as large crystals are often called books; these may measure up to several metres across!

The group’s defining feature is its ability to split into thin elastic sheets (perfect cleavage). Micas do not absorb heat or transfer electricity, making them useful thermal and electric insulators.
