Stunning combo specimen consisting of silky acicular radiating Malachite crystals with clear Calcite on a velvety Dolomite matrix. From Tsumeb Mine, Namibia. Size approx 5cm. Weight approx 65g.

 

Geological:

Malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It was one of the first ores used to produce copper metal, and was cited as early as 79CE by Pliny the Elder, who referred to the mineral as ‘Molochitus’. In 1661 the spelling was revised to ‘Malachite’ as it is known today.

 

Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral. It is colourless or white when pure but is found in a rainbow of different colours depending on trace elements present. Calcite is identified by its low Mohs hardness (3) and its high reactivity with even weak acids, such as vinegar.
