GEOLOGICAL:
Kyanite is an aluminosilicate mineral, found in aluminium-rich metamorphic pegmatites and sedimentary rock. It is most commonly blue but does occur in a few other colours more rarely, including clear, black, grey, yellow and green. It was named in 1789 by Abraham Werner for the Greek “cyanos” or “kyanos”, meaning blue.
Kyanite’s most distinctive trait is its strong anisotropic state, meaning it has two different hardness ranges, one along its length and one perpendicular.
Green Kyanite is a result of chromium and vanadium being present – the same elements that cause the green colouration in Emeralds.
