GEOLOGICAL

Apophyllite is the name for a group of minerals that vary chemically. But it is rarely sub-classified, generally labelled and collected simply under the group’s name Apophyllite. Apophyllites are found in volcanic zeolite environments as well as traprock quarries. Its name is from the Greek “apo” – to be off, and “phyllos” – leaf, referencing the mineral’s flaking habit when exposed to heat.

Hydroxyapophyllite is a member of the Apophyllite group. It’s usually a clear to white colour, but it may occur with a slight colour tint depending on other minerals in the environment. Well known specimens come from North Carolina in USA and from the Kalahari Manganese Fields (KMF) in South Africa. In particular, the N’Chwaning Mine specimens are highly collected for their unique formation.
