Also spelt as Haematite. Nice natural “thumbnail” – small mineral specimen for collectors. A cluster of Hematite crystals on a matrix in association with Andradite Garnet (red) and Calcite (white). Characteristic silver-grey metallic sheen. From Kalahari Manganese Fields, South Africa. Good to A Grade. Size approx 3.5cm. Weight approx 21g.
GEOLOGICAL
Hematite is the oldest known Iron Oxide mineral ever formed. You can find it in varying forms, including reddish-brown masses, metallic silvery-grey scaled masses, silvery-grey to black crystals, and dark-grey masses, among others.
Originally named from the Greek word “Haima” for the rusty red-coloured variety, which has been used as a pigment for over 40000 years. It is an abundant and important ore of iron.
