Dioptase with Botryoidal Chrysocolla Specimen. Lustrous, emerald green Dioptase crystals with Chrysocolla in interesting semi-botryoidal formation. Some gemmy areas. Medium to Good Grade. Kaokoveld, Namibia. Size approx 7cm. Weight approx 29g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Dioptase is a translucent to transparent emerald green crystal. Named in 1797 by Hauy from the Greek for “through” and “to see”, referring to the mineral’s two cleavage directions visible inside unbroken crystals. Dioptase occurs in the oxidized zone of copper deposits.

When heated, Dioptase generates an electric charge (pyroelectric). A hydrous copper silicate, it forms micro-crystals usually less than 75mm in size. While not rare, good specimens are highly collectable. Dioptase was used in Pre-Pottery Neolithic statues dating back to 7200BC!
