Hyacinth Zircon Rough Crystal. Natural rough pieces of a rarely seen material! Semi-crystalline to opaque, in shades of red to rusty brown. Some pieces exhibit a few faces of their crystalline form (dipyramidal) but generally incomplete. Very cool nonetheless! Considering rarity and size of the pieces, Good Grade.
Note that Zircon is not the same as “cubic zirconia” (which is lab created). Zircon is a naturally occurring stone.
Zircon is a transparent to opaque zirconium silicate mineral occurring in a wide range of colours. It has been mined as a valuable gemstone from stream gravels for over 2000 years. Non-gemmy Zircon serves as the primary ore of zirconium metal, used in alloys that require heat & corrosion resistance.
It’s name is derived from the Persian zargun, meaning “gold-hued”. Large Zircon crystals are rare. Their average size in granite rocks is 0.1-0.3mm. Hyacinth is the name given to yellow, orange and red hued Zircon, after the flower.
