GEOLOGICAL:

Tourmaline is the name for a group of crystalline boron silicate minerals first identified in the 1800s. Its name comes from mid-18th century French, based on Sinhalese “tōramalli”. Tourmaline has some awesome properties! It becomes electrically charged when heated (this is called pyroelectric). It is also piezoelectric (meaning it creates electricity under pressure).

Tourmaline occurs in more colours and colour combinations than any other gemstone in the world! The different colours have many different causes.

Topaz is a rare silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine. In its natural state it’s colourless. While trace element impurities can make it pale blue, or golden brown to yellow orange. Topaz has a high specific gravity. Because of that, it’s often found in concentrated placer deposits. For example, the placer deposits in Brazil and Nigeria have produced much Topaz.
