A very cool find from Namibia! Natural white to cream Opal large rough chunk. Nice big display piece. Unusual and interesting! Very Good Grade. Size approx 9.5cm. Weight approx 132g.

GEOLOGICAL

Opals are a broad group of stones that are composed of Cristobalite, Tridymite, a combination of both, or amorphous Silica, containing 3-21% water within its structure.

Gem opals (also known as precious or noble opals) usually have between 6-10% water and display a play of colour due to light refraction within the stone. Whereas common opals lack the play of colour and can be either opaque or glassy with a waxy lustre. Additionally, they are often fluorescent, glowing under UV light.
