Rainbow Moonstone Natural Rough Piece. This material consists of milky white Rainbow Moonstone with black Tourmaline inclusions.  Some pieces, if you’re lucky, have small areas of blue ‘flash’. If you’re very lucky, you might find a piece with a bit of blue Aquamarine! Good Grade. From India.

GEOLOGICAL:

Rainbow Moonstone is actually a white to translucent Labradorite and not a true ‘Moonstone’, despite both being Feldspars. The Feldspars are divided into 2 broad categories: Plagioclase, which contains calcium and sodium; and Orthoclase, which contains potassium. Labradorite and Rainbow Moonstone are Plagioclases, while true Moonstone is an Orthoclase.

The beautiful ‘flashes’ that you can find on some stones is a phenomenon called ‘labradorescence’. Different twinning surfaces within the stone reflect different colours of light. In white Labradorite, it is mostly blue.
