Natural Chevron Amethyst Rough Piece.

Stunning material! Also known as Zebra, Banded, Dog Tooth or Dream Amethyst. Beautiful rich purple with defined chevron markings of white Quartz ,and sometimes Smoky Quartz. Some matrix and brown staining. Very pretty natural rough pieces. From Zambia. Very Good to A Grade.

GEOLOGICAL:

Chevron Amethyst is the name given to Amethyst and white Quartz layered together in a striking banded or “V” pattern. During earthquake or volcanic activity, cracks formed in rock buried deep in the earth.

Silica rich fluids then flowed through the cracks, and as they cooled, the silica formed Quartz crystals on the walls of the cracks. Over a geological long time period, layers of Quartz were laid down on top of each other in the crack until it was filled completely.

The purple colour in Amethyst comes from the presence of irradiated iron inclusions within the Quartz. The amethyst portions of Chevron Amethyst represent growth intervals when the silica rich fluids also contained irradiated iron molecules. And the white Quartz grew at times when iron was not present in the silica rich fluids.
