Beautiful black Tourmaline cluster in association with small clear to opaque Aquamarine and Goshenite crystal rods. Aquamarine from this region is always highly collectable. Fantastic uncommon combo! From Erongo, Namibia. Good to Very Good Grade. Size approx 8cm. Weight approx 210g.

 

GEOLOGICAL:

Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green member of the Beryl family. Its name is derived from the combination of two Latin words, ‘aqua’ (water) and ‘marina’ (sea). Aquamarine’s colour is caused by trace inclusions of ferrous or ferric iron in clear Beryl, leading to blue or blue-green respectively. Traditionally this beautiful gem was believed to protect sailors, fishermen and travelers in general.

 

Tourmaline is the name for a group of crystalline boron silicate minerals first identified in the 1800s. Its name comes from mid-18th century French, based on Sinhalese “tōramalli”. It occurs in more colours and colour combinations than any other gemstone in the world! The different colours have many different causes.

Tourmaline also has some awesome properties! It becomes electrically charged when heated (this is called pyroelectric). It is also piezoelectric (meaning it creates electricity under pressure).
