GEOLOGICAL INFO
Smithsonite is a member of the Calcite group, and the mineral form of zinc carbonate. It is named after James Smithson, the British geologist who first identified it. It is commonly found in botryoidal masses.
Smithsonite occurs as a secondary mineral in the weathering or oxidation zone of zinc-bearing ore deposits. Usually blue-green due to the presence of copper, it can also be found as pink in the presence of cobalt, or coloured yellow by the presence of cadmium.
