Plancheite is a hydrated copper silicate mineral. It is a secondary mineral, which forms in the oxidized zone of copper deposits, along with other copper minerals. Plancheite was named in 1908 in honor of François Gilbert Planche, who was the director of the French Congo Mining Company.
Cuprite is an important collector’s mineral, as well as a minor ore of Copper. Cuprite’s name comes from Latin ‘cuprum’, meaning “copper”, which is in allusion to its copper content. It can form as bright transparent red crystals, or as lustrous, submetallic opaque crystals.
A secondary mineral often formed by the weathering of copper sulfide minerals. Cuprite is widespread as brilliant crystals and grains, additionally as earthy masses in the oxidized zone of copper lodes.
Malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It was one of the first ores used to produce copper metal. Additionally, Pliny the Elder wrote about it in 9CE, referring to the mineral as ‘Molochitus’. In 1661 the spelling was revised to ‘Malachite’ as it is known today. So it has a very long history!
Chrysocolla has a stunning cyan (blue-green) colour. Chrysocolla is a hydrous copper silicate, and it’s usually found in association with Malachite and Azurite. Chrysocolla was first mentioned in 315 BC by Theophastus, who was a Greek Peripatetic philosopher, also a pupil of Aristotle.
Azurite is a deep “azure” blue copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. Thought to be first discovered in early ancient Egypt, during the early 19th century, it became known as chessylite, after the type locality at Chessy-les-Mines near Lyon, France. It is not a common mineral, especially since it is relatively soft, and heat sensitive (don’t charge yours in the sun!).
