Desert Rose White Crystal Specimen. Beautifully formed white tipped Gypsum Desert Rose. The Desert Rose is also known as a Sand Rose, Gypsum Rose, Baryte Rose or Gypsum Rosette. From Mexico. Good to A Grade.
A Desert Rose is a rosette shaped crystal that is a combination of a host mineral and trapped sand particles. Gypsum is the most common host mineral, but Baryte, Celestite and other minerals can also form Desert Roses.
Desert roses form within tens to hundreds of years. They require an arid environment, a concentration of calcium sulfate, and seasonal fluctuations of water. They can appear either as a single rose-like bloom, or as clusters of blooms. On average, they range in size from a pea to 10cm in diameter.
