Rare Black Kyanite in natural fanning blade formation. This particular material gets its dark colour from trace amounts of Graphite. From Brazil. Good to A Grade. Choose your weight.
Kyanite is typically a blue aluminosilicate mineral, although it can also occur as black, green, orange and other colours much more rarely. It was named in 1789 by Abraham Werner for the Greek “cyanos” or “kyanos”, meaning blue. Kyanite’s most distinctive trait is its strong anisotropic state. This means it has two different hardness ranges, one along its length and one perpendicular.
Black Kyanite was originally named Rhätizite (also spelt rhaetizite / rhadezite / rhetizite) in 1815 by Abraham Werner, and was believed to be intermediate between tremolite and kyanite based on its unusual physical characteristics.
