Hemimorphite Crystal Specimen 5.5cm RARE

Sparkling translucent Hemimorphite with very cool visible crystals clustered in a botryoidal fashion on a plate matrix. From Skorpion Mine, Namibia. Good to A Grade. Size approx 5.5cm. Weight approx 50g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Hemimorphite is a Silicate with up to 54% Zinc. It is a secondary mineral that forms in the rocks above and around Zinc deposits, most commonly through weathering altering Sphalerite. Generally, Hemimorphite is grey, white, brown or clear and granular to massive.

Beautiful crystalline formations can occur, sometimes with pale blue to green colour, and are highly prized by collectors. Individual crystals, when visible, can be prismatic, tabular and asymmetric. When Hemimorphite crystals grow into an empty cavity, they often develop into a botryoidal habit or a drusy covering that coats the walls of the cavity.

It gets its name from its unusual ‘hemimorphic’ formation (different crystalline forms at each end of a crystallographic axis). It’s also pyroelectric (can generate electricity when heated). Some Hemimorphite will fluoresce a pale orange in ultraviolet light. Hemimorphite and Smithsonite both used to be called Calamine as the two are difficult to distinguish and often intergrow.
