A lovely natural light blue Celestite crystalline specimen. Our Madagascan supplier tells us that this particular deposit was first discovered by a cattle herder who noticed some weathered crystals close to the shore of the bay. From Sakoany, Madagascar. Good Grade. Size approx 6cm. Weight approx 177g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Celestite, also known as Celestine, got its name from the Latin word Caelestis, meaning “celestial”, which was inspired by the crystals’ delicate shades of sky blue. It was first discovered in Italy in the 18th century. Celestite is a mineral consisting of Strontium Sulfate, which is the principal source of the element Strontium widely used in fireworks.

Madagascar yields some amazing specimens of this mineral which has a range of blue to blue-grey colours. The acicular crystal habit is particularly rare, mostly found out of Congo. Celestite crystals are graded based on shape, clarity and colour, as well as levels of intactness.
