Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green member of the Beryl family. Its name is derived from the combination of two Latin words, ‘aqua’ (water) and ‘marina’ (sea). Aquamarine’s colour is caused by trace inclusions of ferrous or ferric iron in clear Beryl, leading to blue or blue-green respectively.
