Iridescent Andradite Garnet Cluster 4cm

Beautifully formed small Andradite Garnets clustered on a host matrix. The colour is a reddish-orange, with a rare (and awesome!) iridescent pink flash across the surface. Good to Very Good Grade. From N`Chwaning II, Northern Cape, South Africa. Size approx 4cm. Weight approx 40g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

The Garnet group contains different species that all share similar physical properties and forms, but are different chemically. The members include Pyrope, Almandine, Spessartine, Grossular, Uvarovite and Andradite.

Andradite Garnet is one of the most sought-after species in the Garnet group, and gem-quality crystals are rare. Andradites have a very high lustre, with a higher dispersion (sparkle) than diamonds! Not always visible in dark colours, but light colours show a dazzling fire.

You can find Andradites in many colours, including red, orange, yellow, brown, black and even green. Very rarely, Andradites can display a strong rainbow iridescence, sometimes called ‘Rainbow Garnet’.
