Description

The Egyptian Book of the Dead. The Papyrus of Ani in the British Museum.

This is unquestionably one of the most influential books in all history. In this papyrus, a ritual to be performed for the dead is described. It includes instructions for the spirit in the Land of the Gods. It served as the most important reference of religious authority for some three thousand years.

Chapters of this text can be seen carved on the pyramids from the ancient 5th Dynasty. And sections of it are painted on mummy cases. Its referenced even well into the Christian Era. In a certain sense, it stands behind all Egyptian civilization.

Finding The Book of the Dead

In the year 1888, Dr. E. Wallis Budge was the purchasing agent for the British Museum. He heard rumours of a spectacular archeological find in Egypt. Following the rumours, he arrives in Upper Egypt. And lying in an 18th Dynasty tomb near Luxor, he finds “the largest roll of papyrus I had ever seen, tied with a thick band of papyrus, and in a perfect state of preservation.”

This incredible discovery was a copy of the Egyptian Book of the Dead. It had been written around 1500 BCE for Ani, the then Royal Scribe of Thebes. Dr. Budge became perhaps the world’s most renowned Egyptologist after this discovery.
