GEOLOGICAL INFO

Agates are a type of Chalcedony that occurs in bands or patterns. These different colour bands of Chalcedony are produced as liquids of different compositions seep into cavities, forming layers on top of each other, over geologically long time periods.

Blue Lace Agate is known for delicate blue and white banding. It was first discovered in Namibia.

Interestingly, unlike most other stones, the blue colour in Blue Lace Agate is not caused by different mineral inclusions. Instead is due to the same Quantum phenomenon that makes the sky blue – called ‘Rayleigh scattering’.

A very simplified (and yet still quite confusing) explanation of this process begins with light photons entering the crystal matrix. Through a Quantum process, the photons cause the crystal’s atoms to align in a particular pattern. This pattern in turn “sends out” blue light towards our eyes. Because of this, Blue Lace Agate will never fade over time. How cool is that!
