WHY SHOULD YOU CLEANSE YOUR CRYSTALS?
Crystals work very hard. They are constantly transmitting, absorbing and diffusing energy. When you buy a new crystal, it is very important that you cleanse it when you get it home. This is to clear away any negative energy that the crystal has absorbed and any emotional residue it may be holding – your crystal has been handled and touched by many people before it reached you. Cleansing the crystal also recharges and re-energises it.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO CLEANSE YOUR CRYSTALS?
This is a completely personal choice. The more you spend time with and work with your crystals, and the more frequently they are cleansed and recharged, the more they can assist you. Cleansing your crystals is a wonderful way to reconnect with your crystal allays and deepen your understanding and awareness of them.
DIFFERENT WAYS TO CLEANSE
There are many methods of cleansing crystals, and it is up to you to find the one that you and your crystal are most comfortable with. Also, be sure to check whether your crystal is sensitive to any of the methods first – some crystals can be damaged by water, some can be damaged by too much direct sunlight, etc. I like to mix and match methods depending on what is available to me at the time. Don’t be shy to experiment – just make sure that whichever method you try is safe for your particular crystal. Here are some methods of cleansing your crystals:
Hold your Crystal under running water for a few minutes. As you do so, imagine a beautiful waterfall cascading, waves of a tropical beach lapping, or rain drops splashing over your crystal. See in your mind’s eye all the negative energy wash out of the crystal, and feel the crystal become re-energised and purified.
I often take out my crystals during a rainstorm, amidst much laughter and wetness, and leave them on the ground while the rain pours down on them.
Not all crystals are suitable for this method. Halite, Selenite, Lapis Lazuli, Malachite and Turquoise are some of the crystals not suitable for this method as water can damage them.
Some crystals are able to clear negative energy from other crystals. Clear quartz (also known as rock quartz), citrine and carnelian that have been programmed for this purpose are all good options.
Place the crystal to be cleansed on or next to the clear quartz you have programmed and leave it there for about a day. An amethyst drusy cluster (a cluster of points on a flat rock base) can cleanse several crystals placed on it at the same time. If you have a collection of tumbled stones, try keeping a tumbled citrine with them.
To use this method be sure to programme the cleansing crystal first, and when you place the crystals to be cleansed, see in your mind’s eye the cleansing crystal at work.
The earth’s natural magnetic charge and grounding qualities can also draw off negativity from crystals. This method returns the crystal to where it came from – the earth, its natural home; and works well for earthy crystals like Jasper.
As you bury the crystal, see in your mind’s eye the crystal being rejuvenated by the earth. Leave the crystal buried for about a day and a night.
Obviously, delicate stones are not suitable for this method as you may have trouble cleaning them afterwards without damaging them.
You can also fill a bowl with earth and lay your crystals on top of the soil for a gentler option.
Similar to the method above, fill a bowl with sea salt or Himalayan salt and place your crystals on top of the salt.
The vibrations of pure sound can cleanse crystals. Using a bell, timsha or singing bowl, see in your mind’s eye the gentle, pure, resonating sounds passing through the crystal and cleansing it.
You can use this method to cleanse several crystals at once, paying attention to each crystal for a moment in turn.
Light a smudge stick (a wedge of dried herbs bundled together), an incense stick, cone, resin or dried herbs in a bowl. Gently wave the smoke over and around your crystal. You can use your hand or a special feather you keep for this purpose. As you do this, picture any negative energies being swept away and dissipating with the smoke.
Choosing a botantical that has cleansing properties (like sage, impepho, rosemary or palo santo) further boosts the power of this cleansing method.
This method is safe for all crystals and has the added benefit of clearing the energy of the room too. I like to play soothing music while I do this cleansing ritual.
SUNLIGHT & MOONLIGHT
Put your crystal outside on the grass on a bright sunshine-filled day, or leave it out at night on a full moon. Place your crystal with intention, seeing in your mind the crystal absorbing the rays and becoming cleansed and energized.
You can also place your crystal on a windowsill to soak up the rays.
Sunlight can damage certain crystals (rose quartz for example will fade with prolonged sun exposure) so check beforehand – but there a few crystals that absolutely relish a day in the sun, like a Golden Healer. As a Cancerian, I’ve always been attracted to the magical allure of a full moon and this method is safe for all crystals.
OILS & SPRAYS
This again taps into the power of botanicals. You can buy or make an essential oil spray or oil blend containing herbs and plant extracts which have cleansing properties.
Mist the spray over the crystals, being careful not to overdo it. Using an oil blend, put a small amount on your finger and anoint each crystal. As always picture in your mind the crystals being cleansed and recharged.
Not all crystals are suitable for this method as some delicate mineral specimens may be damaged by the water or oil. Crystals on the higher end of the hardness scale will be fine.
